I don't usually watch a lot of television. However lately, I have been watching the news reports about hurricane Katrina. I watch for a little while and then find myself bursting into tears and feeling despair for those poor people. I decided to watch extreme makeover instead. How sad can a decorating show be? Words are funny aren't they? The same word can mean different things to different people. Some words just sound peculiar. Take "spoon" for example. I caught my kids laughing about that word in the car the other day. "Spooooooon" does sound odd. Where does that come from? Perhaps that is the sound we make when we try to speak with it still in our mouths. No...wait, it is middle English meaning "chip of wood".

Canada Day went off with a slow fizzle instead of a bang. There were no fireworks on July 1st because of the fog. I had to force myself to think about what this day should mean to me. I take it too much for granted. Most Canadians believe that basic human rights should be available to everyone, no matter who you are. This is not the case in many parts of the world.
Why doesn't everyone think like Canadians? The world would be more peaceful. Wouldn't it?
